The ELISA Immunoassay:


Grades 9-12


Students will study the specificity of an antibody-antigen reaction by comparing the binding of antibodies and antigens from 4 different types of animals (rabbit, chicken, cow, and horse).  Reagents purchased from Modern Biology Inc., 1-800-733-6544.

Introducing Plasmid DNA into E. coli bacteria:


Grades 10-12


Students will learn about plasmids, and create a strain of bacteria that is resistant to ampicillin. Reagents purchased from Modern Biology Inc., 1-800-733-6544.

DNA Fingerprinting


Grades 10-12


Students will use restriction enzymes and agarose gel electrophoresis to make a DNA fingerprint profile of a number of samples of DNA.  Reagents purchased from Bio-Rad's Biotechnology Explorer kits, 1-800-4BIORAD.

Amplification by the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR).


Grades 10-12


Students will use the powerful PCR technique to amplify a segment of DNA.

Tobacco  Mosaic Virus Infection


Grades 7-12


Students will infect bean plants will tobacco mosaic virus.

Drospohila Polytene Chromosomes


Grades 9-12


Students will prepare slides of the giant polytene chromosomes from salivary glands of the fruit fly drosophila.

Preparation of Human Chromosome Spreads:


Grades 9-12


Students will prepare and view slides of human chromosomes from cancer cells.

pGLO Transformation:


Grades 9-12


Students will transfer the plasmid pGLO into bacterial cells, causing the bacteria to glow under an ultraviolet light source. Reagents purchased from Bio-Rad's Biotechnology Explorer kits, 1-800-4BIORAD.

Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) Purification:


Grades 10-12


Students will isolate GFP from a culture of bacteria, using a chromatography procedure.
